Recycling

Recycling is a key to environmental sustainability.

Simply put, recycling prevents the waste of potentially useful materials, reduces the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduces energy usage, air pollution (from incineration), water pollution (from landfilling), and reduces the need for “conventional” waste disposal. This ultimately has an effect of lowering GHG (Green House Gases) emissions. Many corporations are increasing their recycling initiatives and a large part of their Corporate Social Responsibility and sustainability objectives.

Legislation has increased the demand for recycled materials.

Minimum recycled content mandates and utilization rates have increased demand by forcing manufacturers to include recycling in their operations. Content mandates specify that a certain percentage of a new product must consist of recycled material. Utilization rates and permits enable industries to meet the recycling targets at any point of their operation or even contract recycling out in exchange for credits. There are also ISO standards related to recycling, such as ISO 15270:2008 for plastics waste and ISO 14001:2004 for environmental management control of recycling practices.
